KAY
MELLOR (Writer/Director)
FANNY AND ELVIS is
Kay's directorial debut. She has made her name as a writer for
television, film and theatre. After a late start Kay
obtained a degree in Drama at Bretton Hall. She co-founded Yorkshire
theatre company and toured nationally with five of her stage plays. Early success came
with at the West Yorkshire
Playhouse with A Passioinate Woman, which then transferred
to the West End. Current negotiations are in progress to take the
play to America.
Kay's television projects include the
film Some Kind of Life starring Jane Horrocks (1993); the commercial
and critical success Band Of Gold (1995/96)-
the second series of which was nominated for a BAFTA, a Prix
Italia Award as well as winning the RTS and Cable Ice Awards. 1997
heralded the six-part spin-off series Gold and the
single film Jane Eyre for LWT.
1997 saw Kay's writing talent
brought to the big screen with Girls Night, starring Julie Walters and Brenda Blethyn.
She wrote and starred in her own one woman show Queen at
the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 1998 and currently has several
projects in production including the televising of her original
six-part series Playing The Field l, ll and lll. Playing The
Field l, has won the Independent Award and was nominated for
an US and Bafta award. She is currently developing the feature film
A Passionate Woman.
LAURIE BORG (Producer)
Laurie Borg has been working in the
film industry for over 15 years, beginning his career at
Enigma Productions working on The Killing Fields and The Mission. In 1985 Laurie became involved with Defence Of The
Realm as Location Manager, continuing to work on several films
as Location Manager including Mona
Lisa, Shanghai Surprise and The Tall Guy.
In 1989 Laurie produced Elaine
Proctor's debut feature film On The Wire, which
received critical acclaim and won a 'Bear' Award at the 1990
Berlin Film Festival.
He teamed up with Roger
Randall-Cutler and Lynda Miles as Production Manager on the award
winning Commitments and went on to Line Produce a series of
highly successful films including Split Second, Orlando,
Shopping and Funny Bones. Laurie has since co-produced the
Oscar winning Sense and Sensibility and more recently B.
Monkey and The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice. Laurie has
several projects in development with Scala Productions including The
Devil Has No Sympathy, Thanks For The Memories and A Passionate
Woman.
NIK POWELL (Exceutive Producer)
In the early 1970's Nik Powvell set
up Virgin Records with Richard Branson and in the space of ten
years the pair turned a small mail-order record operation
into a multimillion pound conglomerate.
In 1982 Powell went into partnership with
Stephen Woolley, proprietor of the Scala
Cinema, and formed Palace Video, followed by Palace
Pictures and then Palace Productions. Powell has acted as Executive
Producer on all of Palace's productions including Neil Jordan's Tlie
Company of Wolves, and Mona Lisa (which won Bob Hoskins
the Best Actor award at
Cannes and an Oscar nomination), Frank Clarke's Letter to Brezhnev, Michael Caton
Jones' Scandal, Julien Temple's Absolute Beginner's, A Rage
In Harlem, Waterland
starring Jeremy Irons, Richard Stanley's Hardware and
Neil Jordan's Oscar winning The Crying Game.
In 1992 Powell and Woolley formed Scala Productions. The first
film that Nik Powell was
executive producer on for Scala was Backbeat, directed by Iain Softley. Other films include Terence Davies'
The Neon
Bible, Angela Pope's The
Hollow Reed, Fever Pitch based on Nick Hornby's
bestselling novel, Bharat Nalluri's Downtime, Shane
Meadows' Twenty Four Seven, Stephan Elliot's Welcome
to Woop Woop, Divorcing Jack starring David Thewlis, the
multi award-winning Little Voice, directed by Mark
Herman, The Lost Son, directed by Chris Menees and starring
Daniel Auteuil.
Films in post production include, History
Is Made At Night, directed by Iilkka Jarvilaturi, The Last
Yellow, a co-production with Jolyon Symonds Productions, directed
by Julian Farino which stars Mark Addy, The Last
September, directed by Deborah Warner. Five Seconds To
Spare, directed by newcomer Tom Connolly is currently shooting.
Projects in development include Jonathan Wild, with Richard
Loncraine set to direct, and Skin
Tight, which will be directed by Jonathan Lynn and will star Matt Dillon and Burt
Reynolds.
Nik was co-founder of The Film
Consortium, is a member of the British Screen Advisory Council and
in 1996 was appointed Chairman of the European Film Academy who
host the Annual European Film Awards.
JOHN DALY BSC (Director of
Photography)
John Daly is a seasoned Director of
Photography in television and film. Working with directors
such as Antonia Bird on The Men's Room, his work has been recognized
by BAFTA and the RTS. In 1996 he was nominated for a
BAFTA for Best Photography on the television drama, Our Friends
in the North and received a Best Photography nomination from
the RTS for his work on the drama Broken
Glass.
John has worked on successful and
critically acclaimed series such as My Night with Reg, An
Unsuitable Job for A Woman and Far from the Madding Crowd - for
which he received this year's BAFTA for
Best Photography and Lighting. John has now completed four feature
films including the surprise independent hit, Titanic Town directed
by Roger Michell and Persuasion also directed by Roger
Michell, which again earned John a BAFTA award in 1995
for Best Photography. His latest feature is Essex Boys also
directed by Terry Windsor, starring Sean Bean and Alex Kingston.
STEPHEN WARBECK (Music)
Stephen Warbeck is Head of Music and an Associate Artist of the Royal
Shakespeare Company. He has
had a successful career in television, theatre and film with
recent success for the multi-award winning Shakespeare in Love, for which he won the Oscar for Best
Original Music or Comedy Score. He has also composed the music scores
for the critically acclaimed Mrs
Brown starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly, Heart starring
Christopher Eccleston and Sister my Sister starring
Julie Walters and Joely Richardson.
Stephen's work in theatre includes
well established relationships with the Royal National Theatre,
the RSC and the Royal Court Theatre. Stephen has composed music
for productions such as The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,
An Inspector Calls - which was transferred to
Broadway, Tokyo, Australia and Vienna - Harry and Me and
Built on
Sand. As well as composing music for television dramas
such as Truth or Dare, starring John Hannah and
Helen Baxendale and the award-winning Prime Suspect series,
he has written music for many BBC radio plays and writes
for his band the hkippers.
MARIA DJURKOVIC (Production
Designer)
Maria Djurkovic has had a career
that has spanned theatre, opera and ballet, commercials and
promotional films and a succession of television dramas and films. In the late 1980s Maria worked on films
such as Sammy
and Rosie Get Laid as Assistant' Art Director and on Scandal
and Stealing Heaven as Set Dresser. She then went on to work
on a number of high profile television dramas as Production
Designer, including Spender series
III for the BBC, Little Napoleons for Channel 4, the two
hour special Inspector Morse - Way Through the Woods and
most recently, RKO 281, starring Brenda Blethyn and John
Malkovich, executive produced by Ridley Scott.
In 1997 Maria won the Evening
Standard Best Technical Achievement Award for the lavishly'
produced film Wilde, starring Stephen Fry. Maria's
other films include Young Poisoner's Handbook in
1994, Sweet Angel Mine in 1995 and the award winning Sliding
Doors starring Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah in 1997.
CHRISTOPHER BLUNDEN (Film Editor)
Chris Blunden has worked on a
number of television dramas, serials and features films. Working
for Carlton Television he edited Bramwell, series II directed
by Paul Unwin, the pilot for the popular Granada
series The Grimleys and Head Over Heels for Carnival
Films.
As Visual Effects Editor Chris
worked on the box office hit, Highlander starring Christopher Lambert and as Co-Editor on the epic Terry Gilliam
film, The Adventures of Baron Munchasusen. As Film Editor
Chris has worked on a range of international films including the final film in the Carry On series:
Carry on Columbus, directed
by Gerald Thomas, Hackers starring Jonny Lee Miller, the
very popular Rowan Atkinson film directed by Mel Smith, Bean and
the recent British feature Bedrooms and Hallways directed
by Rose Troche.
STEWART MEACHEM (Costume Designer)
Stewart Meacheni's extensive
costume design experience encompasses theatre, television and film. After establishing a career at
the BBC Stewart went on to
work as Assistant Costume Designer on a series of films including
the Oscar awarding winning Chaplin, directed by Richard
Attenborough, A World Apart, directed by Chris Menges,
the visually stunning epic, 1492, directed by Ridley Scott and the
Oscar award-winning, Blue Sky set
in the 1950s, and directed by Tony Richardson.
As Costume Designer, Stewart has
continued working, on a range of international productions, including
City of Joy, starring Patrick Swayze and directed by Roland Joffe,
The Young Poisoner's Handbook directed by Ben Ross and the
British independent hit, Shooting Fish starring Kate
Beckinsale.
Stewart's-work for the stage includes
productions for The Royal Shakespeare Company and
London's National Theatre, as well as The
Rocky Horror Picture Show.
KERRY FOX (Kate)
Kerry has starred in several highly successful films
including Shallow Grave, with
Ewan McGregor, which received the Best Film Award for Acting at
Dinard Film Festival and was in competition at Sundance. Kerry has
also starred in Michael Winterbottom's Welcome To Sarajevo. She won the Best actress award at the San Sebastian Film
Festival and the NZ Film Awards for her lead role in Jane
Campion's An Angel At My Table. Other film credits include Wisdom Of Crocodiles in which
Kerry starred with Jude Law, The Hanging Garden and The Last Days of Chez Nous. Kerry
has also starred in several West End Theatre productions including
l Am Yours at The Royal Court and The Maids at the
Donmar Warehouse.
RAY WINSTONE (Dave)
Ray has just completed a slate of
leading roles in extremely successful films including Gary
Oldman's Nil By Mouth, Antonia Bird's Face and Film
Four's Martha Meet Frank, Daniel and Lawrence with
Rufus Sewell and Jo Fiennes. He has recently finished shooting,
Tim Roth's The Warzone, Angelica Houston's The Mammy,
Final Cut by Segma Productions and Roberta Hanley's Woundings.
He also starred in the BBC 2 drama Births, Marriages
and Deaths, shown in February this year. Previous leading film
roles have included Quadrophenia and Scum. Ray has
made numerous television appearances including leading roles in Kavanagh
QC, Murder Most Horrid, Casualty and a guest appearance in Space
Precinct. He has also appeared in various theatre productions
at the National and Royal Court.
BEN DANIELS (Andrew)
Ben Daniels is probably best known
for his role in Beautiful Thing, directed by Hettie Macdonald. Ben also starred along side Rachael Weiss in Michael
Winterbottom's I Want You. Among Ben's numerous stage
performances including Naked and Waiting For Godot his role
in Never The Sinner saw him nominated as best supporting
actor in the 1991 Olivier Awards. Notable Television appearances include
Inspector Alleyn Mysteries - directed by Michael
Winterbottom, Silent Witness, A Touch Of Frost and Capital
City.
DAVID MORRISSEY (Rob)
David Morrissey has recently
starred in Anand Tuckers' highly acclaimed Hilary and Jackie . He
has also acted in films with some of the industries
leading directors including George Sluizer's The Commissioner- in
which he starred with Jeremy Irons, Bill Forsythe's Being Human, Stephen
Gyllenhaal's Waterland, Peter
Greenway's Drowning By Numbers and John
Irving's Robin Hood.
David has appeared in several very
successful BBC television dramas such as Our Mutual Friend,
Holding On and Out Of The Blue as well as Finney and
Between The Lines amongst others. He has also worked
extensively with The Royal Shakespeare Company on productions including
Henry VI , Edward IV and King John.
JENNIFER SAUNDERS (Roanna)
Jennifer Saunders has become
a household name with her long time collaborator, Dawn French which
has culminated in four extremely successful French and Saunders
series for the BBC. Jennifer began her television
career starring in Happy Families, written by Ben Elton and
the Granada series, GirIs on Top which she
co-wrote and co-starred Dawn French, Ruby Wax and Tracey
Ulman. .
As an original member of the
multi-talented Comic Strip team, Jennifer has starred in such
memorable Comic Strip outings as Five Go Mad in Dorset, Bad
News Tour, Strike which won the 1988 Montreax Golden Globe
Award and last years' Four Men in a Car. As the creator and
star of the BAFTA award-winning Absolutely
Fabulous, Jennifer
Saunders has secured her place as one of the UK's best known and
admired female comic actresses and writers. Her film credits
to date include Peter Richardson's Supergrass, Kenneth
Brannagh's In the Bleak
Midwinter and Muppet Treasure Island.
COLIN SALMON (Alan)
Colin Salmon has had a successful career
in television, theatre and film, with recent
performances in Wisdom of Crocodiles co-starring Jude Law
and the lead role in Isaac Julien's powerful film on the
influential black third-world freedom fighter, Frantz Fanon. Colin
will also soon be seen in the latest Bond adventure The World
is not Enough as Charles Robinson, reprising his role
from Tomorrow Never Dies.
Nominated for the Best Newcomer
Award British Television Industries, Colin has had a string of
notable performances in television dramas, such as the award
winning No Child of Mine directed by Peter Kosminsky, Band
of Gold also directed by Kay Mellor and the BAFTA
award-winning Prime Suspect II.
GAYNOR FAYE (Sam)
FANNY AND ELVIS is Gaynor's first
feature. Gaynor is best known for her role as Judy Mallet in Coronation
Street. She has also appeared in several theatre productions such as
The Office Party, which toured throughout England
and the US, and Romeo and.Juliet in which she played
Juliet at The West Yorkshire Playhouse. Television work has included the role of Crystal in the BBC series The Sharp End and
Mabel Billigton in The Life And Times of Henry Pratt for
Granada
